More applications, more complications…
Successful integration of IT solutions that fuel company’s operations is one of the biggest challenges faced by leading enterprises and their IT departments.
It is obvious that new requirements and needs result in constant increase of the number of applications used; however, the management expects always the same: everything must work and the maintenance costs must be the lowest possible.
It used to be much simpler. Both the equipment and applications often came from the same supplier and were closely related.
With time this hermetic world has opened, the number of applications has constantly been growing, and so has been the complexity of management. Integration has become a critical element of proper operations of the organization. It is true not only inside the company (which has been ensured by ERP systems), but also its environment (business partners, offices and institutions etc.).
Every new solution has had to be integrated and adjusted to the processes used in the company. The result of such actions has quite often been a tangled web of connections between applications that exchanged various and often redundant information.
…and higher costs!
Integrating those solutions to meet the company’s needs is not only a hard, but also expensive process. Additional applications must be developed or purchased, and then the company must bear the cost of their adjusting to those already in existence.
When using technologies created by different suppliers, the company must constantly train administrators in order to obtain and maintain competence.
We are forced to spend a lot of money on availability and security of particular elements of a complex architecture. To help realize the actual level of spending it is worth remembering that 70-80% IT budgets are allocated to maintaining existing systems (source: Intel Corporation report “Standardized IT Infrastructure for Higher Business Value”, 2004).
Naturally a question arises: how can we limit those enormous expenses without losing the opportunities offered by old and new IT tools?
Opportunities or expenses?
The solution to an age-old dilemma ”opportunities or expenses” is a consistent and flexible integration platform covering both technology (hardware and logistic resources) and applications, which includes all systems vital for the company.
Unfortunately, the total cost of such a solution also includes expenses related to the platform itself, expenditure on integrating the existing applications and the costs of applications themselves.
Taking into account the changeability of business conditions, product upgrades and resulting functional changes, the potential costs are still quite high. Can we lower them somehow?
SAP NetWeaver – revolution in integration
A solution to the above problems is SAP NetWeaver. SAP NetWeaver is a new application and integration platform, prepared by SAP. The traditional IT infrastructure often lacks flexibility, a possibility of scaling and openness that ensure its effectiveness.
SAP NetWeaver caters for such needs by proposing a whole new concept of creating and giving access to applications, by viewing organization’s operations through integrating people, data, processes and technologies into one consistent and precise mechanism.
SAP NetWeaver completely changes the concept of using IT systems. Instead of many specialized systems the users obtain comprehensive portal mechanisms based on Java, J2EE nad SOA/ESA (Service Oriented Architecture / Enterprise Service Architecture) technologies.
Thanks to this the users receive one, consistent interface of applications (an Internet browser), enriched by SSO mechanisms (Single Sign On), which give them access to all necessary functions.
To make the execution of those tasks possible, SAP NetWeaver offers a number of solutions that integrate people, processes, data and technologies.
What is inside?
Key components of SAP NetWeaver platform are:
- SAP Enterprise Portal: a common, consistent platform that integrates data from various systems and aggregates applications available for users on the basis of a flexible role system
- SAP Mobile Infrastructure: a complete infrastructure that helps give access to and develop applications onto mobile devices (notebooks, PDA, mobile phones), giving technological independence.
- SAP Business Intelligence: aggregates data and supports the reporting process from gathering and analysis to distributing data in the organization.
- SAP Master Data Management: helps unify data scattered in many systems and applications; enables to create and manage huge data warehouses that are the basic consistent source of information for the company
- SAP Exchange Infrastructure: a flexible integration platform that offers a system of data exchange between processes that use them and operate in applications. The basis for creating adapters that enable communication between various systems
- SAP Web Application Server: Java/ABAP application server that constitutes the basis for all components of SAP NetWeaver platform
- SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio: a central development environment for SAP NetWeaver applications based on an open Eclipse technology
- SAP Visual Composer: a tool based on Web technology, which is to model business applications in SAP Enterprise Portal
- SAP Solution Manager: a set of tools and services for managing SAP solutions support
Advantages
Implementing SAP NetWeaver platform is a serious strategic decision. By optimizing its IT architecture a company may also optimize some processes and influence its cooperation with business partners.
However, we must bear in mind that implementing SAP NetWeaver does not mean discontinuing the use of SAP solutions used by the company.
They constitute functional sets that use SAP NetWeaver platform. However, instead of SAP module or functions available in dedicated applications we obtain an integrated package of applications; one consistent environment that helps them execute their tasks.
Thus by using SAP NetWeaver platform the company gains the following advantages:
- Integration and cooperation as a basis for company’s operations, and not an additional function
- Increased innovativeness thanks to unified data and support for the employees to cooperate. Increased communication quality and promotion of team work.
- Higher operational efficiency as a result of unifying various IT systems. Thanks to integrating people and data SAP NetWeaver makes a single access point to not always compatible applications, provides data and tools to their integration.
- Decreasing the total cost of ownership by using the existing expenditure on employees’ skills and technical infrastructure. SAP NetWeaver elements give many users integrated access to data. The www interface reduces costs of training and central management and the security system helps lower the administration costs.
- Open standards and technologies offer flexibility in adjusting the old solutions and developing new applications to quickly changing needs.
- A possibility of ”fear-free” use of IT solutions created by suppliers other than SAP, as thanks to SAP NetWeaver they become part of the application body of the company.
It means that SAP NetWeaver is a flexible, expandable platform providing solutions not only for today, but also an open environment for creating and developing applications that will become necessary in near or further future.
SNP Is a SAP NetWeaver Expert Partner
In June 2004 SNP received from SAP Polska a status of SAP NetWeaver expert partner. The title confirms high level of SNP’s skills and experience in SAP-related integration services.
During many years of implementing and developing SAP systems at clients’ locations, SNP has also been integrating them with other applications. In this way SNP clients obtain a guarantee that they cooperate with a partner experienced both in implementation and integration, which ensures them a full range of assistance in SAP development as their main IT platform.
SNP consultants have supported over 100 projects of integrating SAP applications with the use of the following technologies: ALE, RFC, IDOC, SAP Business Connector, SAP Exchange Infrastructure and others.
